How to Use the VAT Calculator
Enter the amount you want to calculate, then choose whether you want to add VAT or remove VAT from an amount that already includes it.
Select the appropriate VAT rate and the calculator will show the net amount, VAT amount and gross total. The standard UK VAT rate is 20%, while a reduced 5% rate and 0% zero rate apply to certain goods and services.
If you are unsure which VAT rate applies to your transaction, check the relevant HMRC guidance before relying on the calculation.
Understanding Your VAT Calculation
Your calculation is broken into three figures: the net amount before VAT, the VAT charged and the gross amount including VAT.
When adding VAT, the calculator starts with the net amount and adds the selected percentage. When removing VAT, it works backwards from the VAT-inclusive total to identify the net amount and VAT element.
If you need help beyond a calculation, including VAT registration, VAT Returns, Making Tax Digital, scheme reviews or HMRC correspondence, our VAT services can provide ongoing support.
