Who May Need to File a Self Assessment Tax Return?
Whether you need to file a Self Assessment tax return depends on your income and circumstances.
You will generally need to send a return in certain situations, including if you were self-employed as a sole trader with more than £1,000 of gross trading income, were a partner in a business partnership, had Capital Gains Tax to pay, or need to pay certain other tax charges through Self Assessment.
You may also need to file if you receive untaxed income from sources such as property, dividends, savings, foreign income, tips or commission.
Company directors do not automatically need to file a Self Assessment return simply because they are directors. A return may still be required where, for example, they receive dividends or other untaxed income, or where another Self Assessment requirement applies.
If you are unsure whether you need to file, we can review your circumstances and explain the next steps.
Why Many People Use an Accountant
Self Assessment can involve several income sources, supplementary pages, allowable expenses, reliefs and tax calculations. Mistakes or missing information can result in an incorrect return or additional questions from HMRC.
An accountant can review the information you provide, prepare the relevant parts of the return and explain the resulting tax calculation before submission.
• Review before submission
• Relevant allowances and reliefs considered
• Clear explanation of tax due and payment deadlines

No. Being a company director does not by itself mean that you automatically need to file a Self Assessment tax return. A director may still need to file because of dividends, other untaxed income or another Self Assessment requirement.
For the 2025/26 tax year, HMRC must normally receive a paper tax return by 31 October 2026. The online filing deadline is 31 January 2027, and tax due through Self Assessment is generally payable by 31 January 2027. Different deadlines can apply in some circumstances.
The information required depends on your circumstances. It may include employment documents, self-employment income and expenses, property income records, dividend information, bank interest, pension contributions, Gift Aid information, foreign income and details of relevant gains or other taxable income.

Yes. Where you have authorised us to act and we have the information needed to complete the return, we can prepare the return for your approval and submit it to HMRC on your behalf.
An initial £100 late-filing penalty can apply if a required return is submitted after the deadline. Further penalties can arise if the return remains outstanding, and separate penalties and interest may apply where tax is paid late.
