What Is a Company Tax Return (CT600)?
A Company Tax Return is the submission a company makes to HMRC when it is required to report its taxable profits and Corporation Tax position. The main form within the return is the CT600. It reports your company’s taxable profits and calculates how much Corporation Tax is due for each accounting period.
The return must be submitted to HMRC along with:
- Statutory company accounts
- Detailed tax computations
- Supporting schedules where required
If HMRC has issued a notice requiring a Company Tax Return, the return must still be filed even if the company makes a loss or has no Corporation Tax to pay. Accurate preparation is essential to avoid penalties and unnecessary HMRC enquiries.
When Is a Company Tax Return Due?
Your Company Tax Return is normally due 12 months after the end of the accounting period it covers. Corporation Tax is usually payable earlier, normally 9 months and 1 day after the end of the accounting period.
The two deadlines are separate, so it is important not to wait until the Company Tax Return filing deadline before checking whether Corporation Tax is due.
Key deadlines:
- Company Tax Return (CT600): normally within 12 months of the end of the accounting period
- Corporation Tax payment: usually 9 months and 1 day after the end of the accounting period
Different Corporation Tax payment rules can apply to companies that are required to make payments by instalments. Our Company Tax Return service helps you keep track of the relevant filing information and deadlines.
What Happens If You File Your Company Tax Return Late?
Filing your Company Tax Return does not have to be stressful. Late, incomplete or inaccurate returns can lead to penalties and unnecessary HMRC attention. You can read more about Corporation Tax late filing penalties.
For Company Tax Returns with a filing deadline on or after 1 April 2026, the standard late-filing penalties are:
- 1 day late: £200
- 3 months late: another £200
- 6 months late: HMRC may estimate your Corporation Tax bill and add a penalty equal to 10% of the unpaid tax
- 12 months late: a further 10% of the unpaid tax
Repeated late filing can result in higher penalties, so it is important to deal with an overdue Company Tax Return as soon as possible.
If Corporation Tax itself is paid late, HMRC can also charge late-payment interest. This is separate from the penalties for filing the Company Tax Return late.
